YOU AIN’T SEEN NOTHIN’ YET!

January 4, 3013  By Jack Jodell

What an eventful week it has been! First, the Tea Party-infested reactionary Republicans were unable to drive us off the fiscal cliff. The Senate overwhelmingly passed a measure which prevented taxes from going up drastically on the vast majority of citizens by a whoppingly uneven bipartisan vote, and the House followed suit, although by a lesser margin. It was signed into law by the President on January 2. This meant, of course, that for the first time  in over 20 years, the hated Bush tax cuts for the  rich had been partially done away with, and the GOP played a decisive part in actually increasing taxes on the wealthy – Grover Norquist be damned! It was a tremendous victory for President Obama and the Democrats. However, it was far from perfect. Obama had to scale back his request for tax hikes on the rich from his initial starting point of $250,000 per year to a higher $400,000 per year ($450,000 for couples filing jointly). Still, the rich WILL be paying higher taxes starting immediately.

John Boehner, the biggest drunk on the Hill and the worst, most ineffectual Speaker of the House in perhaps this nation’s entire history, was totally marginalized and looked miserable and completely helpless. So very afraid of the government-hating Tea Party faction of his wretched party, he was obviously trying to not anger them too much out of  fear that he would lose his Speakership due to them in a few days. At one point, he even came up to Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and hatefully said to him, “Go F*ck yourself!” Hardly the type of demeanor one would expect from the Speaker of the House! Of course, what else could we expect from him? I say, “Go F*ck YOURself, Boehner, you pathetically  inept little boy!” To Boehner’s credit, though, he did vote in favor of the measure, even as his Majority Leader Eric Cantor  and his Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy voted against it. Such treachery is becoming standard operating procedure every day among this hopelessly fractured party.

Upon completing this vote, Boehner promptly called for the adjournment of the House, completely ignoring his prior pledge to the governors of the states which suffered severe damage from Hurricane Sandy that the House would vote on and then appropriate the very necessary Federal damage relief funds they needed immediately. Republican New Jersey governor Chris Christie was understandably furious at this betrayal and tried unsuccessfully FOUR times to reach Boehner by phone.  He was told each time by a Boehner spokesman that the Speaker was unable to take his call. The next day, Christie deservedly lambasted both Boehner and his Tea Party-infested House majority for  this unforgivable neglect. A very angry Republican New York Representative Peter King also strongly voiced his outrage and even urged regular contributors to NOT donate to this year’s Republican congressional campaign fund! Boehner ignored them and simply put out a statement which said that he would no longer meet with President Obama on any further budget talks – an utterly unprecedented dereliction of duty by a very small, cowardly man who is apparently in way over his head!

This Republican Civil War is on full blast, folks. The narrow-minded, debt-obsessed, government-hating reactionary Tea Party faction is paralyzing and destroying the party altogether. With the debt ceiling and budget debates looming menacingly ahead, this spells bad things in store for not only the Republican Party, but also our nation and the entire global economy as well. People, hold on for what will be a wild ride over the next two months. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

  1. Hi Jack, good post, as always. You know, it seems to me that the batsh*t crazy extremists of the GOP have learned absolutely nothing from the last election. If anything, they continue to get more and more extreme, pushed along by the likes of Fox News/Drudge/Limbaugh. In fact, I never thought I’d be saying this, but Limaugh is actually a reasonable, intelligent radio host—-that is, compared to the new breed of even more extreme right-wing talkers, like Mark Levin. Here, where I live in the DFW Metroplex, there are THREE hate-wing radio stations that spew their NeoNazi crap 24/7. (And, of course, there is NOTHING on the radio dial here for progressives). I listen to Mike Malloy myself—but I have to do it over the Internet.

      Marc,
Thank you very much for not only your compliments, but also for your common sense. I still consider Limbaugh to be far too extreme, and I regard those other crazies as being completely off the charts. These vicious new right wing extremists are relentless and seek only total power. They are intolerant of anyone who opposes them in the least. They have just declared an intent to offer far right primary opponents to each and every Republican who had voted for the fiscal cliff measure. They resemble killer bees in their ferocity and are also behaving much as the Nazis did in Germany just prior to seizing power in 1933. As such, they bear watching – and fierce opposition on our part, every step of the way. For their idea of freedom is strict subservience to only them!

Jack, a nit pick, if you will excuse me. This is an important distinction everyone should be very, very clear about. Hitler became chancellor by winning an election. So did many Nazi thugs who won seats in the Reichstag. Many people nowadays think the Nazis got control of Germany in an armed takeover of the government. They didn’t. They used Germany’s fledgling democracy to to their advantage, then destroyed it, along with much of Europe, Russia and their own country.

  2. I have to say… the ONLY thing the 112th congress accomplished was to screw the civil liberties of U. S. citizens. Now we have new ‘fall in line’ status with more Dems but less cohesion. Misdirected by right wing – ISM (along with all the comedy shows that support it) … It remains to be seen if the new cashe of politicos fresh from elections will do any different. Occupy really walked and shook the ground… but DC didn’t pay ONE BIT OF ATTENTION. Like what is now happening with a global Indigenous movement… IdleNoMore. It’s the Viet Nam war and beginning civil rights’ fights all over again (it seems).
On the upside: I don’t think America is buying the one liners out of DC any longer. Thank you to you and me and all the ALTERMEDIA. Awareness is growing and people are waking up. There are WOMAN SENATORS who took office this week. I am genuinely grateful for that. A balance of feminine / masculine strengths and compassion are necessary to bring us into alignment with cleaning up the mess of industrialization, the fear and loathing of war and greed, the judgement of misguiding religious controls and patriarchal plutocracy. It’s not that women are better … it’s that at this point, many of them who would walk as leaders are more willing to work through the heart instead of the bankster account. Healing the country trumps waging wars or running campaigns. And the People are waking up to that. AnD! People can change, in the right circumstances … I give you Chris Christie. Eh?
    Beautiful post as always Jack.

Thanks, Gwen. I agree with what you said, and I don’t expect this new Congress to be much better than the last, but I DO agree that the old BS won’t work anymore. Two key things must occur by 2014: we must all remain relentless and undeterred in our struggle against the far right oppressors, and the Tea Party must be ERADICATED! It is a foul and malevolent reactionary movement which must be destroyed altogether if we are to succeed in implementing a fairer and more egalitarian progressive agenda.

I think of this whenever I see Republicans wailing, whining and gnashing their teeth about the deficit and the need to cut spending. Obama’s approach would’ve meant more revenues coming in with which to pare down the deficit. Republicans wanted to jack the cutoff for keeping the Bush tax cut to $1 million a year, which would’ve meant even less additional revenue. No one in the media I’ve seen even brought this glaring contradiction up.

Thank you for your response, satem1dome.
Your comment proves how irresponsible and corporatist our mainstream media has truly become. We need a strong liberal media once again; one that is not compromised by corporations.

    S.W.,
The point I was trying to make is that these Tea Partiers are also using and abusing our electoral system to their advantage. They are attempting to subvert our democracy to fit their narrow and warped world view. In the process, they are ignoring many vital elements of how our democracy has always worked. Their steadfast opposition to any type of compromise is but one example of how twisted they are. So is their avowed policy of trying to defeat and remove any Republican who doesn’t vote exactly the way they say. I will very soon devote an entire series of posts as to how dangerous and undesirable they are, and how their aims truly are, how anti-democracy they are, and why THEY must be removed from office themselves.

    • I’m truly looking forward to your series, Jack… I have entirely too many friends, former and present, and family members that subscribe to the idea that any dissent from their rigid ideology is tantamount to treason… and someone like me? Apparently a demon from hell… this past election cycle revealed many of these people to be how they really are, rather than how they would like others to think they are… and it’s more than a bit frightening how many people there are like this; as much as I would like to think most of my fellow citizens are more open-minded than that, and that these rigid authoritarians are in the minority, one does begin to wonder.

        paulthesaxguy,
I’m with you 100% in my lack of patience with those reactionaries who are steeped in rigid, unyielding, autocratic dogma. I simply don’t have the time of day for hateful, ignorant people any longer…

    • satem1done says:

Jack, everything you say about the tea party scourge is correct. I mentioned how the Nazis came to power because many Americans have a naive notion such a thing couldn’t happen in a democracy. It could and did, and people everywhere need to know that.
