YOU BET YOU’RE PAYING TOO MUCH IN TAXES!

By Jack Jodell, Apr. 8, 2011. Also posted on Roundtree7 (http://roundtree7.wordpress.com/)

So you think you’re paying too much in taxes? You ARE, but it’s not due to entitlements, as the crazy conservative Republicans and Tea Party faction claim!

You are paying too much because giant multinational corporations aren’t paying THEIR fair share, and because they have shifted all the tax burden away from themselves and onto YOU!  Just take a look at the following graphs and charts that were gleaned from two fabulous new websites: http://www.usuncut.org/, and http://nationalpriorities.org/publications/2011/taxday-2011/revenues/  (left click on each diagram to make it larger, or just view the huge ones found at the actual websites).

As you see by this diagram, General Electric, Bank of America, Verizon, and Citibank paid ZERO taces even though their income and profits were in the BILLIONS of dollars! Not only that, but their CEOs received bonuses in the millions of dollars, and they spent millions of dollars of YOUR MONEY on lobbyists to influence Congress in THEIR favor. Does this seem fair to you? Of course not!

This second chart shows how, over the years, corporate taxes have dropped steadily, while yours and mine have steadily increased. To add insult to injury, many of these corporations received subsidies directly from the federal government, lowering their effective tax rate to a figure even lower than what is shown here. “Where’s MY subsidy?” you may be justifiably be asking yourselves!

This last graph shows how the corporate tax rate has steadily declined just since the 1970s. Consider that numerous corporations have put all their profits in overseas tax dodges like the Cayman Islands, it is very difficult to accept charges from blowhards like Sen. John McCain, Rep. Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney, half-Governor Sarah Palin, or the biggest blowhard of all, tax-hater Grover Norquist –  that American corporations are severely overtaxed and should have their taxes reduced even further!

Grover Norquist and the entire Republican Party in Congress are trying to make us believe that our budget situation is dire and that we must slash government spending. They rail about our deficit and want to privatize Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and do away with or privatize many other government programs. They care nothing about the needs of the poor, the handicapped, the sick, the elderly, or even the middle class. They are LYING to effectively weaken the government altogether, because they HATE it and want it to have no say in regulating greedy business interests for the public good. They believe there should be no restriction at all in a person’s ability to make as much money as he or she possibly can, even if in the pursuit of those monies people are victimized or stolen from.

Well, we liberals and progressives disagree entirely with that selfish and harmful belief. The American middle class is disappearing because it is under attack from far-right politicians and their plutocratic, sneaky, behind-the-scenes financiers like the Koch Brothers, and loud-mouthed wealthy pundits like Rush Limbaugh.

WE WON’T PUT UP WITH IT ANY LONGER! Here’s what you can do:

1. Take ALL of your money and holdings out of big banks like Bank of America and put it into credit unions.

2. SPREAD THE WORD—MAKE THIS BLOG POSTING GO VIRAL!

3. Stop watching corporate media and instead get your news from non-corporate, viewer-supported sources like LINK TV, Free Speech.org, the BBC, public television, and NPR.

4. WRITE YOUR SENATORS AND CONGRESSPERSONS AND TELL THEM YOU WANT A FAIRER TAX CODE WITH NO CORPORATE LOOPHOLES. TELL THEM NOT TO VOTE FOR TAX CUTS FOR BILLIONAIRES, OR BUDGET CUTS THAT WILL HURT NEEDY PEOPLE!

5. Get your friends and organize a new PEOPLE’S PARTY faction to caucus at next year’s local Democratic Party caucuses. Take a stand there against corporate greed and nominate new, progressive candidates who will support fairer taxation!

What these corporations have been doing to us is indefensible and outrageous! MAKE THIS POST GO VIRAL AND TELL THE WORLD YOU AND I AREN’T GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!

I am an American Dissident trapped in a country where poor and middle class people are constantly being exploited and lied to by a very rigid and conservative plutocratic elite. I believe in government OF, FOR, and BY the people, not one controlled as it now is by corporations and special interests.

Actually, Jack, I posted that at Man with the Muckrake.

Alas, my connection to BoA is as a debtor. Perhaps I should stop paying until THEY pay their taxes!

      Hi Laci the Dog.
I’m sorry; I thought it was mud_rake. Regardless, it was a fabulous post. I like your idea regarding B of A, but I fear if you withhold payment it will just affect your credit rating unfavorably. But for all who have savings or credit cards through them, I would recommend withdrawing immediately and joining a local credit union instead!

This just goes to show why balancing the budget the Republican way — by cutting spending — can’t work, even aside from the fact that it would throw the country back into recession. The crisis was manufactured by years of Republican tax cutting in the first place. Even if they got all the spending cuts they want, they’d just cut taxes on the wealthiest and corporations yet again (as the Ryan plan proposes), creating another deficit and starting the whole circus over.

      Thanks for weighing in, Infidel753!
Yrah, the GOP economic plan is trash, just as it’s always been. Their real aim in always wanting to cut spending is simply to weaken the federal government to the point where their plutocratic puppetmasters can simply ignore it altogether. Unfortunately for them, you, I, and all others of like mind are out there in opposition – and our numbers are growing! This is NOT government of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1% – YET!

  3. Tom Harper says:

At some point the public is going to have to wake up and notice that their own taxes and expenses are going up and up, while more megacorporations are paying zero taxes and the wealthiest 1% keep getting tax cuts. I can’t believe the general public isn’t in an uproar over this yet, but this mass oblivion can’t last forever.

    • Jack Jodell says:

I’m with you all the way, Tom. Somehow just wishing and hoping you will someday be among the among the wealthy elite so we’d better not raise their taxes is no longer a sound idea, so raise them we MUST.

  4. Well done; those are all excellent suggestions.

Let me add that we’re going to have to find a way to convince a whole lot of people to get past their displeasure/discomfort/resentment about various minority groups getting to live, work and play like real, first-class American human beings. Those still fuming about civil rights successes, gay rights and such are hurting themselves and the rest of us in ways large and small, sometimes by making spiteful choices, sometimes because they’re too distracted to pay attention to how they are being manipulated, used and abused. If they go on playing the spoiler, our democracy will be wrecked for good — a loss they will suffer along with the rest of us.

I’m glad you brought that up, S.W., because it’s very true. People have to quit blaming the less fortunate for getting the occasional drop of mercy they do get, and start realizing their real enemy, the upper 1%, are simply playing them off like Ping Pong balls against those who have little or nothing. Rather than scapegoat or hate the poor, we in the middle should unite with them and start clobbering the 1% at the top! Class warfare? YOU BET—BRING IT ON!!!

  5. Pretty good post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog posts. Anyway I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you post again soon.

  6. Major thanks for the article post. Will read on…
